The completion of the roadwork on 126th St. to SR 37 is finally coming to an end, bringing relief to many who live in that area after a year and a half. However, future construction may pose more difficulties for Fishers residents.

The construction on 126th St. has proven to be necessary, as it helps improve traffic flow. However, it caused many problems for residents of neighborhoods located off of that street.

?[During the construction], I had to take a completely different route to get to school every day,? resident of Oak Hall, Brittany Rockhill, said. ?And it still takes me forever to get down that road because [the speed limit] is only thirty. When they raise the speed limit back up to forty it will be better, but right now it is just kind of a pain.?

Like Rockhill, all of the students living in those neighborhoods had to reconsider how they would travel to school and back, taking time out of their mornings. Many school buses also had to be re-routed in order to get students to and from school safely.

?The opening of 126th St. makes our routes along that area run much smoother and faster, especially after FHS has dismissed in the afternoon,? director of transportation for HSE school district Jim White said. ?Approximately 40 buses travel that section of 126th in the AM and PM. During the construction, we had to reroute six buses due to the closure of the entrances to three neighborhoods.?

Although the construction made getting around more difficult, many people still think traffic flow has improved on that side of Fishers.

?The improvements to 126th St. have already had a positive impact on the flow of traffic and as we continue to grow, it will serve as an important thoroughfare between the eastern and western ends of Fishers,? White said.

As much as this construction has helped, there is still further construction to be done in order to make roads in Fishers as safe as possible.

?Indiana Department of Transportation has decided to change traffic configuration to better serve the public during winter conditions,? police officer Kevin Sutton said.

The road construction may be a pain now, but overall it is increasing the productivity and safety of roads all over Hamilton County.
