Egypt?s military leaders warned that a failure of Islamist and secular factions to overcome conflicts with peaceful dialogue would lead to ?disastrous consequences? for the country, according to media reports Saturday.
?Anything other than that will force us into a dark tunnel with disastrous consequences; something which we won?t allow,? said an unnamed military official on Egyptian state television Saturday.
That could set up a return to martial law in the country as Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi seeks to tamp down two weeks of sometimes- violent protests, according to the New York Times. Read more on how Morsi may be gearing up for martial law.
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.Protests flared after Morsi issued a decree on Nov. 22 granting himself near-absolute presidential powers. Morsi was elected president by a narrow majority vote in June.
This past week, several civilians reportedly were killed in clashes between factions around the presidential palace, and offices of the Morsi-affiliated Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo were set on fire.
On Saturday, Morsi opponents continued a sit-in around the presidential palace while the military set up a wall of concrete blocks around the palace, according to reports.
Many Egyptians see Morsi?s power consolidation as a return to the autocratic rule of former President Hosni Mubarek, who stepped down in February 2011 during the Arab Spring protests.
Frustrations over a lack of democratic reform have been growing steadily with Egyptians, as the Washington Post pointed out. Read more on anger at Morsi in charts.
A senior Muslim Brotherhood official, Abdel Khaleq Al-Sherif, told Reuters that the military?s statement on Saturday was balanced and didn't take sides politically.
