WACO, Texas - Trent Blank allowed two runs in 7.0 innings, and the Baylor offense did just enough for the Bears to extend their winning streak to 10 games with a 3-2 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Baylor (21-7, 8-0 Big 12) extended its Big 12 winning streak to a school-record-tying nine games, and Oklahoma State (14-13, 1-4 Big 12) dropped its seventh straight game at Baylor Ballpark.
The Cowboys had the potential tying run on base with a leadoff single in the ninth, but Tyler Bremer came out of the bullpen and got out of the jam with a game-ending double play to record his first career save.
Blank (7-0) leads the nation with seven wins and has won nine straight decisions dating back to 2011. He gave up two runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in a career-high-tying 7.0 innings.
"I thought Trent was as good as I've seen him this year, which coming of that last one (March 24 vs. Kansas), is really good to see," head coach Steve Smith said. "He bounced back from last weekend really well."
Blank needed only 64 pitches to work through his first 6.0 innings, and the only baserunner he allowed was on a second-inning infield single. A two-out single in the seventh snapped his streak of 47 consecutive batters without giving up a hit out of the infield that dated back to the first batter of his start on March 24.
Gabe Weidenaar followed the seventh-inning single with a RBI double, but Blank escaped that inning without further damage. His day ended after giving up a walk and a single to the first two batters in the eighth inning.
Dillon Newman entered with runners on the corner and no outs with the Bears leading 3-1 in the eighth. He limited the damage by allowing only a sacrifice fly between two flyouts to keep the Bears in front by a run.
"We really don't have anybody that's put a lock down on the ninth inning," Smith said. "Different guys have done it. Dillon was our first option today, and he got us through the eighth inning in pretty good shape, but I didn't think he had great stuff."
Robbie Rea led off the ninth with a single against Newman, which brought Bremer out of the bullpen. Mark Ginther moved Rea into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but after Bremer walked the next batter, he induced a groundball to Jake Miller, who combined with Lawton Langford on the game-ending double play.
Baylor led the whole way after Dan Evatt homered to right field in the second inning. Evatt's home run was the first of his 20 career home runs to go to right field. The Bears added a run in the third when Nathan Orf scored after Logan Vick reached on catcher's interference with the bases loaded, and Cal Towey provided what would prove to be the decisive run with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Miller had his third straight multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 to lead the Bears at the plate. Evatt and Towey homered, and Vick had Baylor's other RBI.
Weidenaar had two of Oklahoma State's five hits in the game. Starter Kyle Ottoson (1-4) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits in 7.0 innings.
Baylor and OSU conclude their series with a 1:05 p.m. game on Sunday. The Bears will be looking to sweep three straight Big 12 Conference series for the first time in program history. Baylor is expected to start Max Garner on the mound, while the Cowboys have not yet announced a starting pitcher.
