CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) ? Lindsey Vonn finally got to share a World Cup victory with her little sister, a milestone that moved her into third place on the career wins list.

The American ended a five-week winless streak Sunday with a dominating victory in the super-G, capturing her 47th career title. Vonn finished a massive 0.61 seconds ahead of rival Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, and Tina Maze of Slovenia was third.

Laura Kildow began a visit to Europe last weekend only to witness Vonn uncharacteristically miss the podium in two speed races because of a stomach illness.

"I felt bad last week because I didn't do very well," said Vonn, the overall World Cup leader. "It wasn't a very good example of a World Cup weekend, but this weekend went much better."

Vonn's victory moved her ahead of retired Austrian great Renate Goetschl on the career list. Only Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell (62) and Switzerland's Vreni Schneider (55) have more.

"Records in skiing are really important to me," Vonn said. "The history in our sport is something you can look back on when you're career is over and really be proud of what you accomplished."

Vonn opened the weekend with a second-place finish in Saturday's downhill, although she almost risked missing that race following a warmup mishap with her sister ? which she hesitated to recount.

"Oh my gosh! She's going to kill me," Vonn said. "She thought it was going to be really cool to try to beat me and I didn't know she was so close behind me, and she came up and clipped the side of me and totally went down.

"But she had the biggest smile on her face as she was crashing into the woods. We were laughing about it this morning. She's so small but she has absolutely no fear. I'm disappointed she's not a ski racer because she would have been a great downhiller."

The last of the top-ranked skiers to start, Vonn led at every interval and was more than a second ahead of Hoefl-Riesch at the last checkpoint. While she lost nearly half of her lead over Hoefl-Riesch on the lower section of the course, Vonn celebrated when she crossed the finish line, hardly looking to see her time.

Vonn claimed her sixth career win in Cortina, moving within four of Goetschl's record for victories in a single resort. She also tied Goetschl for the most super-G wins on the all-time list with 17

"Renate has always been such a role model. I remember a few years ago racing together. She did so much in her career," Vonn said. "Cortina has always been a special place for me. I had my first World Cup podium here and I like the hill and the snow is always perfect ? really dry, dense snow that's really similar to the snow in Colorado where I grew up skiing."

Vonn extended her lead in both the overall and super-G standings. She holds a 291-point lead over Maze in the overall standings and stands 87 points ahead of Switzerland's Fabienne Suter in the super-G.

Vonn woke up early to keep tabs on the Denver Broncos in the NFL playoffs, although her team lost 45-10 to the New England Patriots.

"I had my NFL app running and it was alerting me on the scores, but unfortunately it wasn't alerting me very often of the Broncos score," Vonn said. "It's tough, but I still have one team in the mix ? Green Bay."

While she'll probably keep tabs on the Packers game, too, Vonn will head to Venice with her sister before next weekend's races in Kranjska Gora.

"Normally I don't get to do fun things like this, so we're going to have some pizza, maybe some gelato, cruise around, go shopping, take a lot of pictures," Vonn said. "I'll update you guys on Facebook on how it went."

After Venice, her sister is leaving to study in Florence, Italy.

"I've gotten so used to having her around that it's going to be tough to be alone, but I'm working on recruiting more friends to come over," said Vonn, who announced in November her divorce from coach and chief adviser Thomas Vonn. "I hope she can come back some other weekend, and hopefully some of my other family members can come as well."

57 killed in tribal revenge attack in South Sudan

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? Hundreds of armed attackers from a South Sudanese tribe that suffered a devastating assault last month charged into three villages, burned them to the ground and killed 57 people, an official said Friday, an act that perpetuates a cycle of revenge attacks in the world's newest nation.

Some 400 men from the Murle ethnic group attacked the Lou Nuer villages on Wednesday, said Simon Hoth, a county commissioner in Jonglei state, the site of devastating violence the last three weeks. Hoth, a member of the Lou Nuer, said 57 were killed and 40 people were missing and likely abducted.

Twenty-five women and 23 children were among those killed in the Uror county attack, Hoth said. Fifty-two people were wounded.

"They have butchered these people," he said. There was no immediate independent confirmation of Hoth's figures.

Murle fighters were accused of killing 22 people in similar attacks in neighboring Akobo county on Sunday.

Uror was the scene of a larger Murle attack in August in which an estimated 600 Lou Nuer were killed. Those attacks prompted a series of retaliatory raids by the Lou Nuer in Pibor county beginning Dec. 23. One Murle official has said that 3,000 Murle died in those attacks. Neither the central government or the U.N. has confirmed that figure, but scores are feared to have died.

The government of South Sudan recently declared Jonglei state a disaster area. The U.N. mission in South Sudan estimates at least 60,000 people have been affected by the ongoing violence. The UN operation says it has launched one of the most "complex and expensive" humanitarian operations since the end of the Sudanese civil war in 2005.

South Sudan became the world's newest country last year after decades of war with Sudan, but it is now experiencing massive internal violence.

But with retaliation attacks occurring more and more frequently, there is little hope for an end to these clashes. Cattle raiding is at the heart of the tribal clashes. The Lou Nuer are said to have stolen tens of thousands of cattle from the Murle in the December attack.

"Arms are still in the hands of the civilian population," said Jonglei Gov. Kual Manyang Juuk. "And these attacks will continue, definitely."

Juuk said the government is sending police to patrol the area, but Jonglei's extreme underdevelopment makes securing the area difficult. "This is a challenge for the government. They don't live in formal towns," he said.

Hoth said Uror's residents have little hope of being kept safe. "People are now living in fear because the whole county has no security. The U.N. is not there and the (South Sudan military) is not there."

The area is also desperately short of health care to treat those hurt in the fighting.

Heather Whelan, a spokeswoman for humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders, said the group airlifted 12 seriously wounded patients from its clinic in Yuai to receive surgical treatment in neighboring Upper Nile state. Whelan said five of the victims were women and "six were children under 5, with beating or gunshot wounds."

The International Organization for Migration said Friday that an IOM convoy of four trucks carrying kits that include kitchen utensils, soap, jerry cans, blankets, plastic sheeting and mosquito nets is en route to Pibor town in Jonglei. The convoy ? the first by road since the recent violence began ? will be delivered to about 7,500 people.

Canada: Marriages of foreign gays are invalid

OTTAWA?? The Canadian government is abruptly arguing that the same-sex marriages of many foreigners who wed in Canada are not valid, a move that stunned the gay community and could affect thousands of couples.

In 2005, Canada became one of the first nations in the world to formally legalize gay marriage.

Same-sex couples have been marrying in their thousands in Canada, and lenient rules on residency requirements for those seeking a marriage license mean many of them are from abroad.

Ottawa now says many, if not all, the unions involving foreign residents are invalid.

It made the argument in a case where two women, one from England and the other from Florida, sought a divorce after their 2005 Canadian marriage.

'Oh, yes, sorry'
The government's position has prompted sharp questions about why Ottawa allowed so many foreign same-sex couples to get married for so long before deciding the unions were not valid.

"(This) is about to, if it hasn't already, make us look like fools on the international stage," said Martha McCarthy, a lawyer for the couple at the center of the furor.

"We're the leaders of gay marriage ... and the federal government is saying 'Oh, yes, sorry, we forgot to mention that for the last nine years we've been marrying people that we didn't think those were valid'," she told Reuters on Thursday.

Critics blamed the right-of-center Conservative government, which they say wants to roll back social rights such as gay marriage and abortion.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he was unaware of the case.

"We have no intention of further re-opening or opening this issue," Harper reportedly said when asked about a article in the Globe and Mail newspaper, which first reported the story Thursday.

"In terms of the specifics of the story ... I will admit to you that I am not aware of the details," Harper said, according to the Globe and Mail. "This I gather is a case before the courts where Canadian lawyers have taken a particular position based on the law and I will be asking officials to provide me more details."

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said in a statement he would be "looking at options to clarify the law so that marriages performed in Canada can be undone in Canada."

He gave no further details and did not make clear whether Ottawa would continue to argue that marriages that had already taken place could not be ended in Canada.

2,500 affected?
Activists estimate that around 7,500 same-sex couples have married in Canada since 2003, when some provinces first allowed gay marriages. About 2,500 involved were foreigners, many from countries and U.S. states that do not recognize gay unions.

Ottawa says the 2005 marriage in the latest case "was not legally valid under Canadian law" because the women could not have lawfully wed in England or Florida.

It also cited the Canada Divorce Act, which says any couple seeking to end a marriage in Canada must have lived there for a year.

McCarthy said her clients' message was: "We can't get divorced in our own jurisdictions because they don't recognize the validity of our marriage. You guys here in Canada married us so please give us a divorce because no one else will."

A Toronto judge will hear the case on Feb. 27 and 28 and decide whether the government's argument is valid, although the loser is bound to appeal any ruling.

The gay marriage surge was a boon for the tourist industry, which quickly offered wedding packages to U.S. couples.

Evan Wolfson, president of New-York-based gay rights group Freedom to Marry, said it would be "extreme, absurd and cruel" to now declare the Canadian marriages invalid.

"This will come as giant shock not only to the couples but to the businesses, employers, banks and others who deal with them so hopefully they're going to walk back this preposterous undermining of families," he told Reuters.

The issue could become a political problem for Harper, who said he had no intention of reopening the gay marriage file.

Nick Bala, a professor and family law expert at Queen's University, said the case underlined existing problems with the way gay marriage works in Canada.

"There are good reasons why Canadian family courts are only going to take jurisdiction over relationships that have a significant (link) to Canada," he told Reuters.

Foreign gays who only came to Canada to marry and then returned to seek a divorce could have major problems if child custody were an issue, and there was little logic in asking Canadian courts to make decisions about children living elsewhere, he said.

"There are good reasons for Canada to be a marriage haven for same-sex couples. It's not clear that it should be a divorce haven for same-sex couples," Bala said.

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? A Peruvian court on Friday sentenced Joran van der Sloot to 28 years in prison for murder of a young woman he met at a Lima casino, even as the family of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway sought to have him prosecuted in the U.S. over her disappearance in 2005.

The decision comes two days after the young Dutchman pleaded guilty to killing Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old business student.

The court also ordered him to pay $75,000 in reparations to the victim's family, deeming the killing "cruel" and "ferocious."

Van der Sloot showed no emotion as the court clerk read the sentence, describing how he elbowed Flores in the face then beat and strangled her with his bloodied shirt. He told the court he would appeal the sentence.

It is the first ever imposed on him, despite prosecutors' repeated efforts to prove he was involved in Holloway's apparent death on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.

The judges said that due to time already served, van der Sloot's sentence would end in June 2038. But under Peru's penal system, Van der Sloot could become eligible for parole after serving half of the sentence with good behavior, including work and study.

The prosecution had sought a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft.

Van der Sloot's lawyer argued he killed Flores on May 30, 2010, in a fit of rage he blamed on psychological trauma from being hounded as the prime suspect in Holloway case.

The victim's father, Ricardo Flores, complained after the sentencing that Van der Sloot was living well in a Lima prison, where he has been set apart from the general population.

"A jail isn't a five-star hotel," Ricardo Flores told reporters. "Let's hope the authorities take that into account and not just in our case."

"Since the first day we've been complaining about the excessive privileges" that Van der Sloot allegedly enjoyed in jail. He said he would present evidence of that at a news conference on Monday.

Unconfirmed news reports, denied by penal authorities, say Van der Sloot has also had a television and video gaming console. As in many developing nations, foreigners with money can buy superior treatment in Peru's prisons.

The Holloway case remains open and a U.S. judge on Thursday declared her dead.

Her parents want Van der Sloot to eventually be extradited to the U.S. and tried on related charges, although Peruvian criminal law expert Luis Lamas said the law specifies that Van der Sloot must serve his time before he can be extradited.

Van der Sloot was indicted on extortion charges in Alabama the same day he was arrested for the Flores murder for allegedly accepting $25,000 in return for a promise to lead a lawyer for Holloway's mother to her daughter's remains.

Van der Sloot didn't deliver on the offer, and may have used some of that money to fly to Peru two weeks before the Flores murder.

After killing the Lima woman, he took nearly $300 in cash from Flores as well as credit cards, and was captured four days later in Chile.

Van der Sloot told police he flew into a rage when she discovered his connection to Holloway via an instant message sent to him while they were playing online poker in his hotel room.

Police forensic experts disputed that story, and the three female judges who sentenced him noted that Van der Sloot later recanted the confession, claiming it was exacted under duress and without an official translator.

The victim's family contends Van der Sloot killed Flores in order to rob her.

The imposing young man raised on a tourist island has been a staple of tabloids and true crime TV, as well as the subject of several books about Natalee Holloway.

"We've been dealing with her death for the last six and a half years," her father, Dave Holloway, said after Thursday's hearing in Birmingham, Alabama.

He said the judge's order there on his daughter's death closes one chapter in the ordeal, but added: "We've still got a long way to go to get justice."

Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old from the wealthy Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook, disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba, where Van der Sloot grew up.

Her body was never found and repeated searches turned up nothing even as intense media coverage brought the case worldwide attention.

Van der Sloot said he was involved in her disappearance in a videotape clandestinely made by a Dutch journalist. He later denied it, however, and has told several interviewers that he is a pathological liar.

A homicide investigation into Holloway's death remains open in Aruba though there has been no recent activity, said Solicitor General Taco Stein, an official with the prosecutor's office in Aruba.

There is no indication U.S. officials have moved to seek to extradite Van der Sloot; Peru's Foreign Ministry said this week that it has no U.S. extradition request for him.

No members of Van der Sloot's family attended the trial in Peru. His lawyer said the defendant's mother, Anita, did not want the media attention.

The defendant's father, a prominent lawyer, died of a heart attack at age 57 in February 2010.

Putin ally fears Israel is pushing U.S. toward Iran war (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia fears Israel will push the United States into a military conflict with Iran which could retaliate by blocking oil shipments from the Gulf, a confidant of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said.

"There is a likelihood of military escalation of the conflict, towards which Israel is pushing the Americans," Nikolai Patrushev, who heads the Kremlin's Security Council, told Interfax news agency.

Patrushev, a former head of the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said Tehran could respond by blocking the Strait of Hormuz between Oman and Iran, through which 35 percent of the world's seaborne traded oil passes.

"It cannot be ruled out that the Iranians will be able to carry out their threat to shut exports of Saudi oil through the Strait of Hormuz if faced with military actions against them," Patrushev said in an interview published on Thursday.

Tension over Iranian uranium enrichment, which has moved to a mountain bunker better protected from possible air strikes, has raised fears for world oil supplies and even of war.

Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful while Western powers believe it has military aims. Israel, which sees an Iranian atom bomb as a threat to its existence, is willing to attack Iranian nuclear sites with or without U.S. backing.

However, Patrushev said there was still no proof that Iran was on the brink of creating nuclear weapons.

"Talk about Iran creating an atomic bomb by next week we have heard for many years," he said, adding that the United States was trying to topple the Iran's leadership using "all available means" to make the country into "a loyal partner".

Russia, the world's biggest energy producer, opposes further U.N. Security Council sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program and has sharply criticized U.S. and European Union sanctions.

The United States has said it would use force if Iran carried out its threat to block the strait and moved a new aircraft carrier strike group to the Arabian Sea this week.

FOUR MORE YEARS FOR OBAMA?

In remarks clearly aimed at signaling Russian foreign policy after presidential elections in March, Patrushev said Putin would work well with President Barack Obama if he is re-elected when the United States votes later this year.

Patrushev said Obama's chances in the November election were good despite the United States' problems. "With all the difficulties faced by the Democratic administration, President Obama has a good chance of keeping his post," Patrushev said.

Putin himself is almost certain to return to the Russian presidency, something which diplomats see as a setback for Obama's policy of improving relations with Moscow.

But Patrushev said Putin, who is known for his anti-American rhetoric, would work well with Obama.

"In the case of Vladimir Putin and then Barack Obama coming to power, the Russian-U.S. relationship, as well as the situation in the world as a whole, may see a strengthening trend," Patrushev said.
