Owners of NZ ship charged over environmental disaster

WELLINGTON, New Zealand?-- The owners of a stricken container ship wrecked on a reef off a popular New Zealand holiday spot have been charged with causing the country's worst environmental disaster in decades, maritime officials said on Thursday.
Daina Shipping, a unit of Greece's Costamare Inc., has been charged with discharging harmful substances after its 47,230-ton Liberian-flagged ship Rena struck a reef about?12 miles off Tauranga, New Zealand's biggest export port, in early October.
The charge carries a maximum fine of?$488,000. The owners face an additional daily fine of $8,130.

The ship's captain and second officer have already pleaded guilty to operating the ship in a dangerous manner, releasing toxic substances and to altering the ship's documents.
The two Filipino men face sentences of up to seven years in jail. They will be sentenced in late May.
Marine officials said high winds and seas have battered the wreck, causing more containers to fall into the sea and spreading oil still leaking from the ship.
The ship spilt around 3301 tons of thick, toxic fuel oil when it hit the reef, killing thousands of sea birds and polluting beaches up to 60 miles from the reef.

The whole of Cyprus woke up without electricity Wednesday after a problem at one of its power plants resulted in the entire grid shutting down, according to local media reports.
A malfunction at the Mediterranean nation's main Dhekelia power station in the early hours of the morning, triggering breakdowns throughout the system, was blamed for the black-out, according to the English language Cyprus Mail newspaper.
The outage caused massive traffic jams during the morning rush hour, with police scrambling to control intersections where lack of traffic lights confused and angered motorists, Agence France Press reported.

Cyprus's electricity resources are already stretched after its main power generating facility at Vassilikos was almost destroyed in an accidental explosion in 2011 that left 12 people dead. The Famagusta Gazette said last year's explosion occurred in containers, full of munitions, that Cyprus had confiscated from a vessel sailing from Iran to Syria.
London?s Daily Telegraph said Wednesday?s outage forced authorities to put ageing stations back online and to get supplies from the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state which lies north of a ceasefire line splitting the war-divided island.?
Cyprus has a population of about 800,000.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli security forces evicted dozens of Jewish settlers on Wednesday from a building that they illegally took over in a combustible West Bank city, police said.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security forces met no resistance during the operation.
The eviction took Israelis by surprise, because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had blocked an eviction order requiring the settlers to leave the house just a day earlier.
The order had threatened to touch off a violent confrontation between security forces and the militant settler community in Hebron.
The biblical city is home to the traditional burial site of Abraham, the shared patriarch of both Jews and Muslims, and the only place where Jews live in the heart of a West Bank city. It has been a focus of Israeli-Arab violence for decades.
Hebron settlers and their supporters have violently resisted similar eviction orders, retaliating with attacks against Palestinians.
About 850 settlers now live in Hebron in heavily guarded enclaves among 180,000 Palestinians. Hundreds of Israeli soldiers enforce a rigid separation between the two sides.
