The Audio Radio Silenz is the debut headphone model from the audio and design icon, and at $159.99 (list), it's surprisingly more affordable than most Tivoli products. As the name implies, this is an active noise-cancellation pair, which seems like a gutsy move for a company that has never even attempted a standard pair of headphones. In short, the Radio Silenz suffers from some rookie mistakes, like a superfluous volume knob that can lead to distortion issues and noise-cancellation that, while effective, also adds some noticeable high pitch hiss to the equation. Luckily, at moderate volumes, the headphones sound great?and like all things Tivoli, they're good looking, too.

Design
The Radio Silenz uses wood for the housings of its earpieces, offered in three different finishes: black ash, walnut, or cherry. On each earpiece, the Tivoli logo is etched into the wood, just above the visible microphones used for detecting ambient room noise as well as amplifying room noise (all part of the noise-cancellation process). The black pads on the earcups are not the most plush we've felt, but they are not uncomfortable?they could be described as firm. The metallic headband adjusters recede into or expand from a black plastic covering, and the headband is covered in black leather that provides a bit of cushion over your scalp.

Also on the compartment are a Power switch that engages the noise-cancellation (the Radio Silenz can output audio when in passive mode), and a volume knob. You get no mobile phone controls or microphone for calls.?The headphones ship with a not-so-protective, unpadded carrying pouch that they can fold down flat into, along with an airplane jack adapter.?

Performance
Unfortunately, the volume knob is an unnecessary addition that has the potential to cause distortion if your sound source's volume and the headphone volume are both too loud. Most headphones don't include an independent volume control, for this very reason. Some do offer volume controls that actually adjust the sound source's volume, as is the case with many iPhone-friendly models. If you were to max out both your sound source's volume and your headphone volume, you'd likely be in for an ugly (and painful) surprise.

The best sound I got out of my iPhone source was acheived by putting it close to maximum volume, and slowly adding volume on the headphones. Other combinations can work as well, such as maxing out the headphones (or coming close) and lowering your source volume significantly. In these two cases, I found the Radio Silenz to have a beautiful, crisp, articulate response?not bass-heavy in the slightest, but armed with subtle low-end. It's a sound signature that, oddly, reminded me of the in-canal? Etymotic ER-4PT ($299, 4.5 stars), but with a bit more bass boost.

Deep bass tracks like The Knife's "Silent Shout" have plenty of low-end presence, but this is not a subwoofer-like Beats by Dr. Dre ($349.95, 4 stars) bass response?it's much more of an audiophile-friendly flat response. Unfortunately, these deep bass tracks can get a bit distorted at top volumes, but you shouldn't be listening at those levels anyway. At moderate volumes, deep bass tracks sound more balanced than they do on a booming pair of headphones.

In my tests, John Adams' modern classical piece "The Chairman Dances" sounded bright and beautiful, though it sometimes felt like it was missing a hint of deeper resonance on the lower register strings and percussion, and very occasionally, usually with stringed instruments, some notes sounded a bit harsh at higher volumes. For the most part, however, the sound signature suits orchestral music very well, and many bass-heavy genres benefit from the Radio Silenz's more refined, articulate response.

That said, the noise-cancellation is not the best we've tried. It immediately reminded me of the Sony XBA-NC85D ($499.99, 3 stars), a in-ear pair with some audible noise-cancellation hiss issues. The hiss, no matter how much low and middle frequency ambient droning it can eliminate, is quite noticeable, and even audible over the music. The industry standard Bose QuietComfort15 ($299.95, 4 stars) does not have this problem. Of course, it is also almost twice the price.

The best-sounding, most affordably priced pair we've tested recently is the AKG K 490 NC ($249.95, 4.5 stars). Unlike the Radio Silenz, the K 490 NC does not suffer from hiss issues. But below $200, your options are limited. The in-ear Phiaton PS 20 NC ($149, 4 stars) is a bit less expensive than the Radio Silenz, and it doesn't distort at high volumes, though it does have a bit of a hiss issue, too. Overall, I like the Radio Silenz as a straight-up headphone pair?I wish that it didn?t have any noise-cancellation circuitry, bulky shirt-clip, or added volume control. If you're a fan of crisp audio and looking for a pair that offers a certain degree of noise-cancellation at a reasonable price, the Radio Silenz is a good-looking option worth checking out, but it's far from flawless.

One thing I?ve really been struggling with lately, is the idea of assessing some students who are strong speakers, but weak writers. I know in our curriculum, oral communication and writing both are worth 25% of the student?s overall grade, but it really brings down the mark of a student if they are strong in one area, but weak in the other.

I?m wondering if our grading system needs an overhaul? With the advent of technologies like Dragon Dictation and the voice to text application on the New iPad, are we really going to need to know how to physically hand write or type? I?m sure some people will still prefer these methods, but the technology is already here so that those skills are becoming antiquated. I mean, my toddler won?t really need to know how to physically write since we already have verbal means for her to communicate and have it be turned to text.

So it leaves me wondering. Are we giving these students grades lower than they deserve because they can?t express their ideas well in a written format? Do we need to revisit the curriculum standards?

As a disclaimer, this message is not meant to suggest that writing is becoming antiquated. The ability to coherently express one?s ideas is always an important skill. I?m more so suggesting that the physical actions of hand writing and typing, in my opinion, will become antiquated skills at some point in the future.

Florida Creationism: Changing of the Guard

Things just won?t be the same in Florida. First we reported that one of that state?s most dependable creationists won?t be back in the legislature next year because of term limits (see Stephen Wise: On the Way Out).

Then, although we didn?t write about it, Wise and another creationist champion, Orlando Senator Gary Siplin, the first convicted felon to serve in the Florida Legislature, have been recently implicated in a scandal regarding their use of a shadow program at Florida A&M University to pass through funds to non-profits the senators are affiliated with.

We don?t yet know if Siplin will be back next year. Recall that it was Siplin whose School Prayer Bill was recently passed. He and Wise have long been dependable allies of our favorite Florida legislator, Ronda Storms, the creationist queen of the Florida Senate back in 2008. It?s in her honor that our jolly logo adorns this post (see: Buffoon Award Winner ? Ronda Storms). To remind you of Ronda?s glory days four years ago, see Her Most Rapturous Moment.

We have constantly marveled at the incredibly wide-ranging intellectual versatility of our old creationist friend. Ronda is not only a major force in The Controversy between evolution and creationism, she also plays an active role in controversies about Prayer in Florida Schools, and also Naked School Boys, and also the Dewey Decimal System, and also religious license plates, and also serving alcohol at private museum events, and also gambling at Indian casinos.

Storms, a former Hillsborough County commissioner, had two years left before she was term-limited out of the Senate. But she said Friday that a porn scandal surrounding Turner prompted her to abandon the legislature and instead try to oust her fellow Republican.

A porn scandal? Involving a Republican? How could that be? According to this Tampa Tribune story, Turner?s troubles mount:

Days after the Hillsborough County property appraiser admitted he traded lurid emails and text messages with a subordinate, two well-known politicians announced they will vie for his job. ? Once a shoo-in for re-election to a fifth term, Turner?s support within his party crumbled after he confirmed Monday that he exchanged explicit text messages and emails with Carolyn Filippone, his former girlfriend and human resources manager.

Egad! How could a Republican do such a thing? They quote Rapturous Ronda:

?I am unfortunately under the belief that the current property appraiser has embarrassed himself, embarrassed the office and embarrassed the party,? Storms said. ?I am going to run to restore professionalism and integrity and accountability to the property appraiser?s office.?

Noble sentiments! Let?s get back to the Palm Beach Post. They say:

Turner, Hillsborough?s property appraiser for 16 years, this week fired his human resources director, Caroline Filippone, after fighting a sexual discrimination complaint she filed with U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2010. The complaint, which alleged he sent her dozens of pornographic emails from 2007 to 2009 after a personal relationship between the two ended, was dismissed by the commission in April, which frees Filippone to sue Turner.

Great scandal. Too bad it doesn?t involve creationism. But what will become of Ronda?s Senate seat? The Post says:

Shortly after her announcement Friday, former Senate President Tom Lee, a Brandon Republican seen as a moderate, announced he would run for her east Hillsborough Senate seat. Storms said other possible candidates were state Reps. Rachel Burgin, R-Riverview, and Shawn Harrison, R-Tampa.

It doesn?t matter, really. Without Ronda, things just won?t be the same. Meanwhile far worse things are happening in Florida. There?s no news on it lately, but don?t forget about the Florida Theocracy Amendment which will be on the ballot in November. That?s potentially far bigger than some goofball creationism bill.

Anyway, this year?s legislative session is over, and now Ronda is gone. So is Stephen Wise, and maybe Siplin will be going too. Things just won?t be the same in Florida, but there?s one thing of which we have no doubt ? The Controversy between evolution and creationism will continue.

Salford mayor Ian Stewart turns down Paul Massey's offer of help

Salford's city mayor has turned down an offer from election rival Paul Massey to work alongside him.

Mr Massey, who stood as an independent in the race to be mayor, said he wanted to take Ian Stewart up on his offer of working with anybody who wanted to help improve the city.

Mr Massey, 52, had claimed he could help develop youth services to give teenagers something to do. But Mr Stewart said: ?I have always given the assurance that I will work with any credible individual or organisation who conduct themselves with integrity. California Senate passes bill for self-driving cars

A bill that would allow self-driving cars on California's roads has passed the California Senate.

The bill, SB1298, sponsored by Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), establishes guidelines for "autonomous vehicles" to be tested and operated in California. The bill now goes to the Assembly for consideration next month.

Tech giant Google Inc., Caltech and other organizations have been working to develop such vehicles, which use radar, video cameras and lasers to navigate roads and stay safe in traffic without human assistance. Google Inc. has said that computer-controlled cars should eventually drive more safely than humans.

Padilla said his bill passed Monday without objection.

A number of lawmakers test drove Google's prototype autonomous Prius and "came away convinced that fostering this technology is the right direction for California," he said.

"Human error is the cause of almost every accident on the road today. If autonomous technology can reduce the number of accidents, then we also reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on California's roads," Padilla said. "For me this is a matter of safety."

Padilla added that he believes self-driving cars also will improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles, reduce emissions and enable cars to talk to one another to improve traffic flow.

Self-driving cars must legally have a person at the wheel, ready to assume control if anything goes wrong.

The bill does the following:

?Sets up safety and performance standards for the safe operation of autonomous vehicles on California's public roads;

?Allows for the operation of autonomous vehicles on California's public roads by a licensed driver;

?Requires that an autonomous vehicle meets all applicable safety standards and performance requirements in state and federal law;

?Allows the Highway Patrol, in consultation with the Department of Motor Vehicles, to recommend to the Legislature additional requirements for the safe operation of such vehicles on California's roads.

Last year, similar legislation was signed into law in Nevada. In addition, Arizona, Hawaii, Florida and Oklahoma are considering autonomous-vehicle legislation.

Restaurants are expected to add 450,000 jobs over the next three months, the highest summer employment numbers since 1993 according to National Restaurant Association projections.?

?Restaurant industry employment growth will outpace overall employment growth for the 13th year in a row this year, illustrating the key role restaurants play in the nation?s economy,? said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the research and knowledge group for the Association.

Riehle added, ?The boost of this year?s 450,000 summer jobs will propel total eating and drinking place employment to its highest on record. Overall, America?s nearly one million restaurants employ nearly 10 percent of the nation?s overall workforce.??

A: Dear Friend, what a wonderful treat to get your note and to hear about your newly invigorated journey of faith! Your question exhibits a rare combination of being very important and very easy to answer (which is good for me!).

The Doctors of the Church are those saints who have uniquely contributed to understanding of the Church and whose writings are thereby deemed beneficial for all people of all times. There are presently thirty three doctors and it is likely that a few more will be more added soon. If you would like to know more about the thirty-three current doctors, you can do so through this book or here on Wikipedia.

With respect to those doctors I referred to in this post, these are a subset sometimes called ?spiritual? doctors of the Church. The designation ?spiritual doctor? is not an official title but it is commonly held that these saints have notably contributed much to the Church by way of their writings about matters concerning prayer and what it means to live within a profound relationship with God. Silk Hope family tradition includes farming, building furniture ...

The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through Carrboro on May 19 as locals and visitors filtered through booths of community artisans on Main Street.

Louie Graham and his family were not there to enjoy a leisurely Saturday morning or the sweet-smelling bread. They were there to make a living.

Surrounded by wooden chests, tables and the scent of cedar, Graham said he is taking the reigns of the family business. ?I?ve been working with wood since I was eight years old,? he said.

In a business that has all but been taken over by mechanized industry, Graham said farming and woodworking are his family?s main source of income. The Grahams are almost entirely self-sustained on their family farm in Silk Hope. Graham furnished and built his house, owns his own mill for processing the lumber, and maintains a produce and livestock farm.

?My wife is a homemaker. So if she doesn?t have to get a real job, so why should I?? chuckled Graham.

But Graham is just following tradition. For the past 70 years woodworking has been the life source Dan Graham, Louie?s father. He began honing his craft at the age of 15 in Ohio before eventually acquiring a bachelor?s degree in education and exporting his skills to the Republic of Philippines.

?While I lived there, I farmed coffee and taught the locals some woodworking skills to help jumpstart their economy,? Dan Graham said. After rumors of insurgence began rippling through the islands, Dan Graham brought his woodworking talents back to the states, North Carolina specifically.

He then spent the next few years raising his family and cultivating the hobby in his offspring. Dan Graham, whose father was also a carpenter, said it runs in his blood. ?If you?re a farmer?s son, you?re likely to be a farmer.?

The 83-year old said that although his output rate has slowed due to his age, working with wood remains a favorite pastime of his.

?It takes me a while to finish things now, but it keeps my hands busy and my mind active,? he said.

Despite the family?s extensive history in the business, they have not been able to dodge repercussions of the recession and foreign competition.

?One woman showed me a cookbook stand she found on Amazon,? said Graham, Sr. ?I couldn?t make it for five times what they were selling it for.?

But the Grahams? prices haven?t stooped to meet the competition.

?We set our price for what we think is fair for the material and the labor,? he said as he motioned to a nearby cedar chest. ?That chest right there is $320. If someone offered us $319 we wouldn?t accept.?

Although Louie Graham said the family company has suffered from the economy, it still attracts enough interest to stay in business. One patron, Jeff Manly, said it was the uniqueness of the items that keeps him coming back for more. Manly, the owner of three of the handcrafted tables, stopped by to eye the new inventory and considered purchasing a fourth.

?I?ve never seen anything like them at retailers like Lowe?s or Home Depot, he said. ?They?ve held up perfectly for the six or seven years we?ve had them.?

Though the sale of big ticket items like chest of drawers, or in one case, a coffin, is usually a hit-or-miss at the market, Tricia Graham helps to stabilize the family?s income by selling produce and meat.

Tricia Graham, Louie?s wife, said she never planned on making a living as a farmer.

?When we married after college, we were both education majors,? she said. ?We decided we could either teach and be poor and hungry, or farm and be poor,? she said with a smile.

Tricia Graham said she hopes her children will continue their interest in the family tradition. To offset the manual chores that accompany farming, she offers her children an incentive.

?Not many teenagers are willing to get up every Saturday at 4 a.m.,? she said. ?But we gave them their own plots to grow produce on and told them that they get to keep half of the money they earn at the market.?

But Louie, Jr., the youngest of the clan, doesn?t appear to have been gripped with the thrill of agricultural life just yet.

?What?s woodworking?? he responded after being asked about the business. ?On the farm I just do the lazy stuff ? like watch TV,? said the 7-year-old.

But Tricia said little Louie helps out more than he lets on. ?We give him the easy stuff to farm, like squash and zucchini,? she said.

Although the price of produce grown organically is typically more than the prices found at grocers, it?s the taste that keeps the regulars coming back.

?When people are looking for a tomato, they want an ugly one,? she said. ?That?s how you can tell it?s homegrown.?

It's had quite a run, but Microsoft's months-long Robotics @Home Competition finally came to close this past weekend at the Bay Area Maker Faire. Taking home the title (and a $10,000 prize) was Arthur Wait for his SmartTripod, a robotic assistant that relies on Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio 4, the Eddie development platform and, of course, a Kinect to follow a person around and handle camera duties in a natural manner -- or "almost as though a human was holding the camera," as Wait puts it. Just how well does it work? You can get a look at the robot itself and the results it's able to provide in the videos after the break.
